How to Write a Screenplay Part 1

      The Do's and Don'ts

The Excitement and Challenges of Writing a Screenplay

Writing a screenplay is an exhilarating journey, a chance to tell a story in a visually compelling way. It's a thrilling endeavor with the dream that, one day, your script will come to life on the big screen. However, for first-time writers, this journey can also be daunting. The world of screenwriting, with its unique format and visual storytelling, differs significantly from prose or other writing forms. Many aspiring screenwriters find themselves at a loss for where to begin and how to craft an effective screenplay.

      Common Screenwriting Hurdles and Solutions

One major hurdle is not knowing where to start. The urge to just start typing without a plan is strong but often leads down a path of frustration. To overcome this, here are some essential steps to lay a solid foundation for your screenplay:

      • Start with a Clear Premise: Outline a strong premise line that encapsulates your story's essence, including characters, conflict, and conclusion.
      • Ensure Visual Viability: Ask yourself, "Is my idea visually translatable?" If not, it might be better suited as a play or a novel.
      • Identify the Change: Remember, at the heart of every story is change. Whether it's a character, an institution, or even the audience, change is what transforms a situation into a compelling narrative.

What to Avoid as a Budding Screenwriter

While there are many do's, there are also several don'ts:

      • Avoid investing in expensive screenwriting software from the get-go. (there’s plenty of free options out there, and it will help you get started without a costly overhead purchase that you might never use).
      • Resist the temptation to hoard screenwriting books and read them as a precursor to writing. There are some good books out there, but I’ve met a lot of people who just read these books and then never write anything. They can tell you everything they should do but they never actually write.
      • Don’t just daydream about your story for years without putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard).

      Seeking Mentorship for Screenwriting Success

For those feeling overwhelmed or unsure, consider reaching out to a mentor or coach. A seasoned screenwriter or a professional writing coach can provide invaluable guidance, helping you navigate the complexities of screenplay structure, character development, and storytelling techniques. They can offer personalized advice and feedback that books or software cannot.

Mentorship or coaching can be particularly helpful when you're stuck, unsure how to develop your screenplay further, or when you need an experienced eye to refine your work. A good mentor can be the catalyst that transforms your screenplay from a rough idea to a polished script ready for the screen.

      Aspiring Screenwriters

If you're embarking on the screenwriting journey, remember: it's okay to seek help. Whether it's through mentorship, coaching, or joining a writing group, the support you receive can be pivotal in your development as a screenwriter.

Just for today, can you take one step towards refining your screenplay, whether it's drafting a premise line or seeking guidance from a mentor? Remember, every great screenplay began as a single idea, and with the right support, yours can flourish into a story that captivates audiences.
