But I often lost sight of this simplicity, complicating what was inherently straightforward premise with random tangents like “the coffee they drink,” or “this minor character’s love interest in season 3 will be hilarious.”

Take Christopher Nolan’s movie Inception about criminals who invade the subconscious of wealthy people via dream technology for profit. At its heart this movie is a fairly straightforward heist film with all the typical markers.

Simplicity in storytelling shouldn't be confused with dumbing down an idea. Dumbing down implies talking down to your audience, whereas simplicity means communicating on equal footing, fostering empathy and understanding.
