What the Heck is a Writing Coach......?
As a writing coach, my role is multifaceted, but at its core, it's about helping writers navigate the often solitary journey of creativity. Writers sometimes find themselves in a tug-of-war with their own minds, fighting internal battles that hamper their progress. My job is to help them shift this battle from within themselves to the pages of their novels, transforming personal struggles into compelling narratives.
Reducing Creative Isolation
One of the key aspects of my role is to reduce the sense of isolation that many writers feel. The journey of writing can be a lonely one, but it doesn’t have to be. I strive to be an “isolation reducer,” helping writers feel connected and supported as they delve into their creative processes. This connection is crucial in fostering a comfortable and productive writing environment.
From Daunting to Dauntless (is that a word?)
Transitioning between different forms of writing can be daunting. I recall a client who faced challenges moving from short form journalism to long form writing. Through guidance and encouragement, she not only finished her first book but also overcame her apprehensions. Witnessing such transformations is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a writing coach.
Finding Harmony and Confidence
Another client described the feeling of being on the right track as being in harmony while speaking their truth. This beautifully captures the essence of what effective writing should feel like – an authentic expression of one's self. Similarly, a client with a strong academic background expressed self-doubt about her writing abilities. It’s a reminder that confidence issues don't discriminate; they can affect anyone, regardless of their accomplishments or intellect.
Battling the Self on the Page
So, how do you stop fighting yourself and just do the creative work? The answer lies in channeling the fight into your storytelling. Let your characters embody your struggles, your doubts, and your triumphs. This approach not only enriches your narrative but also provides a cathartic outlet for your inner battles.
The Unexpected Rewards of Coaching
Being a writing coach brings unexpected revelations and joys. Like the client who found comfort in unifying the different aspects of his personality through writing, it’s a privilege to witness such profound self-discovery and growth in my clients. Their successes and breakthroughs are a testament to the transformative power of writing.
More Than Just Writing
Being a writing coach is about more than just improving writing skills; it's about guiding writers through the intricacies of their creative minds. It's about helping them find their voice, fight their inner battles on the page, and ultimately, connect with their true selves through the art of storytelling.
