The Art of Defining Goals in Writing

      Crafting Your Vision

In the realm of writing, setting clear visions and goals is like charting a course for an exciting journey. It's not just about the destination – publishing a book or producing a screenplay – but also about the emotional and creative milestones along the way. In my role as a writing coach, I’ve seen how defining these goals can transform the writing process from a wandering path into a purposeful journey.

      A Client's Inspiring Vision

I recently worked with a client whose vision was particularly inspiring: to create empathy and understanding through storytelling, write a commercial feature film, and center a queer woman's story in a traditionally male-dominated genre. This vision isn't just a roadmap for his project; it's a statement of purpose, a declaration of the change he wants to see in the world.

The Feeling of Being on the Right Track

There’s a unique feeling when you know you’re on the right track with your writing. It’s akin to giving your story an authentic voice, a voice that resonates with truth and speaks directly to the hearts of your readers or viewers. This alignment is where your personal experiences and emotions intersect with your narrative, creating a powerful and genuine connection.

Embracing Your Identity as a Writer

As a writer, it’s important to have an identity, a sense of who you are in the vast universe of genres and styles. But what if existing labels don’t fit? Then create your own genre. Carve out a space that is uniquely yours. Your writing identity should be a reflection of your individuality, your unique perspective on the world.

      Aligning Character and Author

Whether writing or coaching, my aim is always to find the authentic alignment between character and author. This synergy is where the magic happens – where characters come to life and stories resonate with depth and meaning. It’s about finding the core of your narrative and aligning it with your inner voice.

      Defining Your Writing Journey

Defining your visions and goals as a writer is about more than just the end product. It’s about understanding what drives you, what message you want to convey, and how you want to impact your audience. It's about crafting a journey that is as rewarding and fulfilling as the destination itself. So, take the time to define your vision, embrace your unique identity, and let these guide your writing path.
